Travelling Alone if you’re Introverted

In Far North Queensland we see a lot of people travelling around alone and experiencing the beauties of this part of Australia first hand.

Now there is an assumption, in some quarters, that solo travellers are all natural extroverts who enjoy ‘mixing in’ with large groups of strangers at every opportunity. In our experience though, that assumption is often false.

It may well be that you are planning to travel up here on your own but you are, in fact, the quiet retiring sort who is typically introverted and who doesn’t want to be ‘engaged’ in conversation and joint fun-filled activities with your fellow holidaymakers.

The good news is that the culture around here is very much one of open and easy friendliness but also that of respecting someone’s privacy. If you prefer to be quiet and solitary in your exploration of some of the natural beauties of places such as Trinity Beach and Port Douglas, then you’ll find plenty of opportunities to simply ‘get away from it all’.
Of course, if you are in somewhere like our Trinity Beach accommodation and you do feel the need for some friendly and good-natured company, then there’ll be plenty of opportunity to make new friends around the pool or on the beach etc.

The only point we would make relating to travelling alone is to remember to let someone know your planned itinerary if you intend to go well off the beaten track into some of the wild natural beauty surrounding the Far North Queensland resorts. That should include your estimated time of return etc.

That’s just basic common-sense safety practice when exploring open and untamed country and it won’t conflict at all with your perfectly understandable desire to be left in peace and to your own devices!

So, if you are a quiet and reserved person travelling alone, you find this part of the world ideal.

How to be a Street Photographer on your Trip

So, you are overwhelmed with the beauty of Far North Queensland and want to make sure you capture as much of it is possible in photograph form to help with future memories etc.

Now at FNQ Apartments we don’t claim to be professional photographers but we have picked up a few streets-cred basics that you might find to be of use.

  • Unless you are a serious photographer, get a point-and-click digital camera. Okay, they may not be quite as glamorous as their big SLR counterparts but if you want to take lots of photos and spend less of your time trying to understand how to work the camera, they’re great.
  • Where photographs of people are concerned, don’t get them to adopt formal poses. These often look starchy and unreal when you look at them back home. Instead, try and snap to them when they don’t know a photo is going to be taken. Of course, they may moan!
  • Get up early for some of the best nature shots. Many beauty spots are at their best very early when there are few people around and the light is ideal. A slight variation on that are the traditional sunset-type photos and they can be great too.
  • Take shots of those things that others don’t. Sometimes a photograph of a bar on the esplanade or the entrance to your Cairns luxury accommodation can bring back more memories than those specially-posed groups standing alongside the pool etc. Oh yes, remember that if other people are going to be included in your photograph just because they’re ‘there’ - ask their permission. Some people can be upset about being photographed without their consent.
  • Finally, remember to somehow annotate your snaps. How many of us have looked at photographs a few months or years later saying “now where on earth was that?”
